How to use Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test
1. Before you begin
Please always read the instruction leaflet carefully before taking a pregnancy test.
If you're testing from the day you expect your period, you can test with urine from any time of the day. If you're testing early, use the first urine of the day.
When ready to test, remove the pregnancy test stick from the foil wrapper and take off the blue cap. Use the test right away.
2. Take the test
Simply hold the absorbent color change tip in your urine stream, or in a sample of your urine collected in a clean dry container, for just5 seconds.
The color change tip will instantly turn pink showing that urine is being absorbed. Continue holding the color change tip in the urine for the full5 seconds.
3. Wait
Asthe pregnancy test begins to work, you'll see blue lines start to develop.
4. Read your results
A ‘Pregnant’ result may appear in 1 minute when testing from your missed period (which is the day after your expected period).
Wait for 3 minutes to confirm a ‘Not Pregnant’ result or when testing before you have missed your period.
A blue line must be present in the control window when you read your result. This line shows that the test has worked.
If no blue line appears in the control window within 10 minutes the test has not worked.
It does not matter if one of the lines that make up the '+' symbol is lighter or darker than the other; the result is 'Pregnant' (positive).
Read your result within 10 minutes of doing a test. Ignore any changes to your result after this time.

How accurate is Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test?
Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test is over 99% accurate from the day you expect your period3.
When can I test with Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test?
Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test can be used as early as 5 days before your missed period (which is 4 days before you expect your period to start). If you test before your expected period and get a 'Not Pregnant' (negative) result, there is still a chance that you may be pregnant. See the chart below for results from lab testing of Clearblue® Rapid Detection with early pregnancy samples.
Number of days before the expected period | -1 | -2 | -3 | -4 |
% of samples from pregnant women giving a 'Pregnant' result | 98% | 97% | 88% | 56% |
How does Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test work?
When you are pregnant your body produces the pregnancy hormone hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotrophin). The amount of hCG in your body increases in the early stages of pregnancy. Clearblue® Rapid Detection can detect tiny amounts of this hormone in your urine. (The sensitivity of this test is 25mIU/ml).
Can any medication or medical conditions affect the result?
- Always read the manufacturer's instructions for any medication you are taking before conducting a test.
- Fertility drugs containing hCG (such as Pregnyl® and Profasi®4) can give misleading results (these fertility drugs are usually given by injection, and testing too soon after administration may give a false 'Pregnant' result).
- Other fertility therapies, painkillers and hormonal contraceptives (e.g. contraceptive pill) should not affect the result. However, if you have recently stopped taking hormonal contraception or are using fertility therapies, your periods may be irregular, leading you to test too soon.
- If you have recently been pregnant (even if not carried to full term) you may get a false 'Pregnant' result.
- Ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, menopause and some very rare medical conditions can give misleading results.
If you do get unexpected results you should discuss them with your doctor.
I previously tested ‘Pregnant’ but have tested again and got a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, or my period has started. What does this mean?
It is possible to get a positive result and later find out you are no longer pregnant (i.e., you may later get a negative result, or your period may start). This is called early pregnancy loss, which sadly is not uncommon, affecting around 1 in 4 pregnancies. However most women can go on to have a healthy pregnancy afterwards. If you do get unexpected results, ask your doctor for advice.
I have used the Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test but the Color Change Tip has not turned completely pink. What should I do?
If the color change tip has not turned completely pink you may not have applied enough urine. However, if the blue line in the control window appears within 10 minutes of performing the test then the test has worked.
I have used the Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test but no blue line has appeared in the control window within 10 minutes. What should I do?
The test has not worked. This may be because:
- The color change tip was not kept pointing downwards or the pregnancy test stick was not laid flat after urine was applied.
- Too much or too little urine was used. You must sample for 5 seconds. You should test again, using a new pregnancy test stick, taking care to follow the instructions. You may wish to collect a sample of your urine in a clean, dry container and immerse only the color change tip for 5 seconds.
What if I am unsure of my result?
Picture A:This denotes a 'Pregnant' (positive) result. This is more likely when you are testing before you expect your period when your hCG levels may be relatively low.
Picture B: This is not unusual when you are pregnant (positive) and you are testing on or around the day you expect your period as hCG levels may still be relatively low.
Picture C: This is more likely to occur when you are pregnant (positive) and you are testing more than a few days after you expect your period as hCG levels are higher.
For your result to be 'Pregnant' (positive) there must be a blue line in the control window and a '+' symbol in the result window within 10 minutes of testing.
It does not matter if one of the lines that make up the ‘+’ symbol is lighter or darker than the other; the result is ‘Pregnant’.
For your result to be 'Not Pregnant' (negative) there must be a blue line in the control window and a '-' (minus) symbol in the result window within 10 minutes of performing the test.
If you are still unsure of your result, you should wait at least 3 days before testing again, taking care to follow the instructions.
My test says I’m not pregnant. What should I do?
You may not be pregnant (negative), or the level of pregnancy hormone may not yet be high enough to be detected. Test again in 3 days’ time. If this test gives you a 'Not Pregnant' result and your period is late, see your doctor.
My test says I'm pregnant. What should I do?
If your test says you are pregnant (positive) you should see your doctor who can advise you on what steps you should take next.
When can I read the result?
A ‘Pregnant’ result may appear in as fast as 1 minute when testing from the day you miss your period (which is the day after your period was expected but did not come). Make sure a blue line is also present in the control window before reading your result. You must wait 3 minutes to confirm a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, or when testing before you expect your period.

How long does it take for a rapid pregnancy test to show results? ›A 'Pregnant' result may appear in 1 minute when testing from your missed period (which is the day after your expected period). Wait for 3 minutes to confirm a 'Not Pregnant' result or when testing before you have missed your period.

It is over 99% accurate at detecting pregnancy from the day of the expected period. It has an ergonomic handle, designed to make the Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test the easiest home pregnancy test to use.
Evaporation lines happen when the urine that was on the test area starts to dry. The chemical composition of the urine sample changes due to evaporation. As a result, the test may start to display a positive line. After the allotted time has passed, you should discard the pregnancy test to avoid confusion.
Can rapid pregnancy test be wrong? ›Home pregnancy tests can be up to 99% accurate. However, in some instances, they may produce a false-positive result. Incorrect test usage, previous abortions and miscarriages, and some medications may lead to a false-positive pregnancy test result. People should always see their doctor after a positive pregnancy test.
Can my rapid test be negative? ›Rapid tests detect parts of the virus that are present in the sample collected from your nose or mouth. If the virus has not replicated to a high enough level in that part of your body, a test will be negative. Only when the amount of virus is high enough will a person's test become positive.
Does a positive rapid test show up immediately? ›Only the result visible in the window 15 to 20 minutes after the start of the test is valid. The result is positive when line C and line T appear in the window. The order in which the lines appear is not important and even if a line is pale, the result indicated is accurate.
Do Rapid tests show false positives? ›There is a chance that any test can give you a false positive result. If you have any doubt about your rapid antigen test result, it is recommended to discuss your results with a healthcare professional to determine next steps which may involve a confirmatory PCR test.
Do Clearblue tests turn positive after 10 minutes? ›Test results should not be read after 5 minutes. Clearblue® Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test: A “Pregnant” result may appear as fast as 1 minute when testing from the day of your missed period. You should wait 3 minutes to confirm a “Not Pregnant” result, or when testing before you have missed your period.
Which pregnancy test is most accurate? ›The most accurate pregnancy test is an in-office blood test, followed by clinical urine tests (doctor's office urine tests). That said, when testing at home, the most accurate pregnancy test is one sensitive enough to detect hCG before a missed period.
What pregnancy tests detect the lowest amount of hCG? ›
One kit, the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test, emerged as the most reliable and sensitive test. "It detected hCG at concentrations as low as 6.5 mIU/ml (thousandths of an International Unit per milliliter) - that's almost sensitive enough to detect any pregnancy soon after implantation," CR wrote.
Can a positive result appear after 30 minutes? ›A positive result can appear at any time after 20 minutes, however you should wait for the full 30 minutes to record a negative result as the test line (T) may take this long to appear.
What happens if you put too much urine on a pregnancy test? ›If you have too little, (if you took the test too early or diluted your urine), it won't be detected. If you have too much, (if you took the test too late), the test strip may not be able to bond to any of the molecules, possibly showing a negative result.
Can a pregnancy test turn positive after 3 minutes? ›Evaporation (Evap) Lines
Pregnancy tests have a reaction time — a period of approximately three-to-five minutes after they're taken when the urine used in them is still damp. The result appears after this three-to-five minute window.
A negative COVID-19 test means the test did not detect the virus, but this doesn't rule out that you could have an infection. If you used an antigen test, see FDA instructions on repeat testing. If you have symptoms: You may have COVID-19, but tested before the virus was detectable, or you may have another illness.
How many pregnancy tests should you take to confirm? ›Depending on when you're taking it, there might be some benefit in taking one test and then a second one (again, a few days later). But cleaning out the entire drugstore shelf to be really certain? Yeah, no. Stick with two or go see your doctor to put any uncertainty at ease.
How long does it take for hCG to show up in urine? ›hCG is a hormone produced by your placenta when you are pregnant. It appears shortly after the embryo attaches to the wall of the uterus. If you are pregnant, this hormone increases very rapidly. If you have a 28 day menstrual cycle, you can detect hCG in your urine 12-15 days after ovulation.
Is one line on a rapid test negative? ›One red-colored line only next to “C” indicates a negative result. Re-test in 24-48 hours if your first test result is negative. A negative test result indicates that antigens from SARS-CoV-2 were not detected from the specimen. However, a negative result does not rule out COVID-19.
How long after a positive rapid test should I retest? ›After ending isolation, persons recently infected with SARS-CoV-2 do not need to test again in the 90 days after they had SARS-CoV-2 unless they develop new symptoms.
Can rapid test change after 15 minutes? ›Is the test result still valid? The result needs to be read after 15 minutes, but not later than 30 minutes. If you read the result for example after 45 minutes, then your test might show an invalid or incorrect result. Please repeat the test by using a new test kit.
What do evaporation lines look like? ›
Evaporation lines are colorless streaks, not actual lines. They typically appear if a person waits for longer than the suggested time to read the test result. An evaporation line can also appear if the test gets wet.
What does an evaporation line look like on a blue dye test? ›What Do Evaporation Lines Look Like? Evaporation lines are generally more muted than the control line. On a pink dye test, an evaporation line may look like faded gray. On a blue dye test, the line can appear as gray or even a lighter shade of blue.
How faint can a positive Clearblue test be? ›HCG is normally only present in your body if you are pregnant. Any positive line, no matter how faint, means your result is pregnant. Levels of hCG in your body will increase over the course of your pregnancy. If you test early, your hCG levels may be still be low and you'll see a faint positive line.

Don't drink too much water, or any liquid, before taking a pregnancy test. Excess fluids can impact the accuracy of the test results, so if your urine is diluted or pale yellow, hold off on taking a test. Diluted urine tends to also have diluted hCG levels which can skew the test results.
Can you be pregnant even if hCG is low? ›If your hCG levels fall below the normal range, it's not necessarily a cause for concern. Many women have gone on to have healthy pregnancies and babies with low hCG levels. Most women don't ever have cause to find out what their hCG levels are specifically.
Can you be pregnant and not have enough hCG to test positive? ›An early pregnancy test might pick up very low amounts of hCG. However, it's possible that you don't have enough circulating hCG to get a positive result even on a sensitive test. Another common reason for getting a false negative is not having enough hCG in the urine you test.
Can hCG levels be negative but still pregnant? ›Is it possible to be pregnant and get a negative pregnancy test result? Yes, it is possible. Getting a negative result doesn't mean you're not pregnant, it may just mean your hCG levels are not high enough for the test to detect the hormone in your urine.
Can a faint positive show up later? ›These early days while you wait to find out whether or not you are expecting can be an emotional rollercoaster. Unfortunately, it is possible to have a faint positive, only to get a negative when you retest a few days later. If this happens to you, it may be that you have had a very early miscarriage.
Does the second line appear straight away pregnancy test? ›
Faint Line on Pregnancy Test
It can be confused with a false positive. The line usually appears several minutes after the time of the test and is caused by evaporating urine. If the line seems faint or you are at all uncertain, take another test.
Should I dip my home pregnancy test in urine, or pee on it? Most tests allow you to either place the absorbent tip in your urine stream for (usually) five seconds or dip the tip in a collected urine sample for five to 20 seconds. Accuracy is not dependent on the method as long as you follow the instructions.
Is it better to pee on stick or in cup for pregnancy test? ›With HCG test strips, you'll want to pee in a cup and dip the test strip in the cup to get an accurate result. If you try to pee directly on the strip, the results may be blurry or invalid.
What happens if you read a pregnancy test after 5 minutes? ›Because tests are typically meant to be read three to five minutes after they are taken, the tests are still damp at the time they are read. After this time frame passes, the urine in the test dries. As the ink makes its way across the screen, the result is displayed.
Do rapid tests have a lot of false positives? ›There is a chance that any test can give you a false positive result. If you have any doubt about your rapid antigen test result, it is recommended to discuss your results with a healthcare professional to determine next steps which may involve a confirmatory PCR test.
What's more accurate a rapid or digital pregnancy test? ›You may be surprised to learn that digital and analog home pregnancy tests work exactly the same way. They may show you your results in a different way, but there is nothing special about the way a digital pregnancy test works, and one type isn't necessarily more accurate than the other.
Do rapid tests ever test positive? ›A rapid COVID-19 self-test can be used at home to detect COVID-19. Rapid self-tests give you results in about 10-15 minutes. If you test positive on a rapid test, you have COVID-19. Please review the guidance for positive cases for more information.
Does positive rapid test show instantly? ›Interpreting the result
Only the result visible in the window 15 to 20 minutes after the start of the test is valid. The result is positive when line C and line T appear in the window. The order in which the lines appear is not important and even if a line is pale, the result indicated is accurate.
